Film Series to Highlight Ukraine’s Freedom Struggle

Denver, February 9-11, 2024.

Five recent award-winning films from Ukraine will be shown in Denver, February 9-11, as part of a unique local collaboration to highlight the country’s gifted filmmakers and its fight to resist Russian invasion.

Entitled “Cinema of Survival: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom — Through the Lens of Film,” the film series will be hosted by MCA “The Cube” at 8351 E Northfield Blvd. near the Conservatory Green in Central Park, northeast Denver.

Tens of thousands are displaced, terrified, left with nothing. United help of our community will make difference for our brothers and sisters in Ukraine, stricken by war.

“This is a first for us,” said Ukrainians of Colorado President Marina Dubrova. “Although we have shown individual films in the past, this is our first film series, which will give Coloradans a more complete context of Ukraine’s reality. We are grateful to MCA and to MSU Professor of Film Vincent Piturro for their support.”

Opening the series on Friday, Feb. 9, is “A Rising Fury,” an award-winning documentary that follows a young couple from the time of the 2014 Euromaidan protests in Kyiv to the present day.

Also featured is the movie “Klondike,” awarded at Sundance in 2022 and featured at the Denver Film Festival last year.

Evgeny Afineevsky, director of “Freedom on Fire,” which chronicles Ukraine’s ongoing fight and which closes the film series on Sunday, Feb 11, will answer questions from the audience via Zoom following the screening. His earlier movie, “Winter on Fire,” was nominated for an Oscar in 2016.

Tickets may be purchased on-line (https://www.mca80238.com/) or at the door. Proceeds go toward humanitarian relief in Ukraine.
