Welcome to the American School Event

On November 4th, Ukrainians of Colorado gathered in Littleton, CO for an event known as “Welcome to the American School!”. Голос Америки Українською, Voice of America in Ukrainian, attended the event and interviewed some of our members in Ukrainians of Colorado who have recently moved to the US.

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the state of Colorado has been constantly receiving Ukrainian refugees. One of the main difficulties for newly arrived families is the education of children in an American school.

Ukrainians of Colorado, together with the secondary school of the city of Littleton and representatives from the state department of education, organized a meeting for Ukrainian families. These events are free, and provide an excessive amount of good information to know for your child.

Zoriana Herman, and her daughter Evelina Herman, speak on their experience of moving to the US and starting school in an American school. Thank you Zoriana and Evelina for being open about your experience.

We plan to hold similar events in the future. Though it may be daunting to start in a new school in a new country, it is possible and there are those that are willing to help and provide information to make it easier. As Evelina says to all Ukrainian newcomers - “You will learn, you can do it, and all will be good”.
